How UPI Cash Works in Reward Apps: Coins to Bank

Published 28 September 2026

By Vishal Kumar — Content & Growth at CashBoo — tests every earning method and payout flow first-hand

Ask anyone in India how they paid for chai this morning and there is a good chance the answer is a QR code. UPI has become the default way to move small amounts of money, so it makes sense that rewards apps use it too. But between tapping a game on your phone and seeing rupees in your bank, several things happen quietly in the background. This guide opens that box, using CashBoo as the worked example.

UPI in one paragraph

The Unified Payments Interface is a bank-to-bank network operated by the National Payments Corporation of India. Instead of sharing an account number and IFSC code, you share a short address such as meena@okaxis, and money can be pushed to it from any participating bank or app. NPCI explains the design in its UPI product overview and publishes monthly volumes on its ecosystem statistics page. For a rewards app, UPI is attractive because it reaches nearly every bank account with just one piece of information from the user.

Stage 1: you build up an in-app balance

Rewards apps do not pay rupees for each small action. They credit an internal currency instead. On CashBoo that currency is Coins, which you collect by playing games, answering surveys, watching rewarded videos and completing offerwall tasks. Keeping rewards in Coins lets the app pay fractions of a rupee for short activities without sending hundreds of tiny bank transfers.

Stage 2: Coins convert at a published rate

Every honest app states how its points turn into money. CashBoo uses two rates:

  • 189 Coins = ₹1 for UPI cash, paid in fixed amounts of ₹500 or ₹1,000.
  • 125 Coins = ₹1 for gift cards, starting from ₹10 (1,250 Coins).

The UPI rate asks for more Coins per rupee because bank transfers cost more to process than digital gift codes. Seeing both rates up front, before you spend time earning, is one of the signs of an app that plans to pay.

Stage 3: you request, the app reviews

  • You choose UPI cash and an amount once your balance is high enough.
  • You paste your UPI ID. Only the ID is needed, never a PIN.
  • The app checks the account: are the earnings confirmed by partners, is this one genuine user, does anything look automated?
  • Once approved, the rupee amount is pushed to your UPI ID and lands in the linked bank account.

The review is where the waiting happens. On CashBoo, UPI payouts are reviewed and usually arrive within 72 hours, while gift cards are usually delivered within a few hours. For a fuller picture of what affects timing, see how long a reward app payout takes.

Why a minimum payout exists

Every transfer has a processing cost and every request needs checking, so apps set a floor below which they will not send cash. A minimum is normal and fair. What is not fair is a minimum that keeps moving: if an app raises the bar every time you get close, treat that as a warning sign. CashBoo's thresholds are the fixed ₹500 and ₹1,000 UPI amounts and a ₹10 starting point for gift cards. Our step-by-step UPI redemption guide shows exactly how to cash out once you get there.

Who is actually paying you?

The money does not come from nowhere. Advertisers, game studios and survey companies pay the app when users try their products, share opinions or watch their ads. The app keeps part of that and passes part to you as Coins. That is also why honest earnings are modest: your reward is a share of what an advertiser was willing to pay for one action. Treat it as pocket money for recharges or small treats, not as income you can depend on.

Two everyday examples

A delivery rider who plays a few games during breaks may prefer gift cards, since a ₹10 Google Play card is reachable quickly. A retired teacher who answers surveys most evenings might instead save towards a ₹500 UPI transfer and use it for a gas cylinder refill. Same app, same Coins, different choices. If you already use Paytm daily, our note on earning Paytm cash shows how a Paytm UPI ID fits in.

Staying safe with UPI payouts

  • Receiving money never needs your UPI PIN. Anyone who asks for it is trying to take money, not send it.
  • Paste your UPI ID from your payments app. A typo can bounce the transfer or send it to a stranger.
  • Prefer apps that show their conversion rate and minimums before you start earning.
  • Allow the stated review time before assuming a problem. The RBI's digital payments FAQs explain your rights as a customer if something genuinely goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What happens between requesting UPI cash and receiving it?

Your Coins are converted at the app's published rate, the request is reviewed to confirm the earnings and the account are genuine, and then the rupee amount is pushed to your UPI ID. On CashBoo this usually takes up to 72 hours.

Do I have to share my UPI PIN or bank details?

No. Only your UPI ID is needed to receive money. Never share your PIN or an OTP with anyone who says they are sending you a payout.

Why does UPI cash need more Coins per rupee than gift cards?

Bank transfers cost more to process than digital gift codes. On CashBoo that is reflected in the rates: 189 Coins per rupee for UPI cash and 125 Coins per rupee for gift cards.

Is a minimum payout a red flag?

Not by itself. Minimums keep processing costs and fraud in check. It becomes a warning sign only when an app keeps raising the minimum so you never reach it.
