Are Reward Apps Real or Fake? A Simple Test to Tell

Published 28 September 2026

By Vishal Kumar — Content & Growth at CashBoo — tests every earning method and payout flow first-hand

Picture this: a college student in Pune sees a reel claiming a phone app will pay her daily cash for playing games. Her cousin says every such app is a scam. Who is right? Honestly, neither of them completely. Some reward apps do pay, in small amounts, for real activity. Others are designed from day one to collect your data, waste your evenings or pull money out of your wallet. The trick is knowing which kind you are looking at, and that is what this guide teaches.

Short answer: real ones exist, and so do fakes

A genuine reward app is real, and the payouts it sends are real rupees, just not big ones. What separates it from a fake is not the design or the number of downloads. It is whether there is an honest business model underneath, whether it is free at both ends, and whether it keeps its promises modest. If any one of those is missing, be careful.

Follow the money: who actually pays you?

Every real reward app can answer one question clearly: where do the rupees come from? The answer is advertisers and research companies. Brands want people to try a game, answer a questionnaire or watch a short ad, and they pay the app for that attention. The app keeps part of the fee and passes part to you as points. On CashBoo those points are called Coins, and you later swap them for UPI cash or a gift card. For a deeper walk-through, read how reward apps work.

Here is the chain, step by step, from a sponsor’s budget to your balance:

  • A sponsor (an advertiser or survey firm) pays the app for genuine user actions
  • You finish something small: a quick game, a questionnaire or a short video
  • The sponsor confirms the action happened, and the app credits Coins to you
  • Once you have enough, you convert Coins to UPI cash, Paytm or a gift voucher

If an app cannot explain this chain, or if the only source of money seems to be you paying in, it is not a reward app. It is something else wearing that label.

What fake apps are really after

The phrase “earn from your phone” sells itself, so scammers keep reusing it. In practice, fake apps tend to fall into three groups:

  • Ad farms that flood you with ads and keep moving the withdrawal goalpost so you never actually cash out.
  • Data grabbers that exist to collect your phone number, contacts or personal details.
  • Fee traps that show a big balance, then demand a “processing charge” or “activation fee” before you can withdraw. This is the most harmful kind, because you end up paying them.

Lost money to one of these? File a complaint on the Government of India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or dial the 1930 helpline quickly. For a longer list of warning signs, bookmark our guide to fake earning app red flags.

The 5-point test before you install

Take two minutes and check any earning app, CashBoo included, against these five points. A trustworthy one should pass every single one:

  • No money in, ever: joining costs nothing and withdrawing costs nothing. A fee at either end means stop.
  • A threshold you can reach: the minimum cash-out should be achievable by a normal user in a sensible amount of time, not months of grinding.
  • A company you can identify: a named developer, a working support contact, privacy and terms pages, and a filled-in Play Store data safety section that states what it collects.
  • Safe requests only: it may ask for your UPI ID to pay you, but never your OTP, UPI PIN, password or net-banking login.
  • Modest language: it talks about pocket money, not “₹1000 daily guaranteed”.

Real does not mean rich

A genuine app still pays small. For casual users, a fair expectation is roughly ₹300 to ₹3,000 a month, depending on how much time you give it and which tasks you pick. Think of it as recharge money, a snack budget or a few OTT subscriptions, not rent. Any app that promises a fixed daily income is either exaggerating or not genuine. Quick verdict

So, real or fake? It depends on the app, not on the category. A real one has advertisers paying for your time, lets you in and out for free, and is honest that the money is small. A fake one sells a dream and then asks for your money or your secrets. Run the five-point test, trust the result over the ads, and you will rarely get fooled.

Frequently asked questions

Do reward apps actually pay, or is it all a scam?

Genuine reward apps do pay, usually small amounts through UPI or gift cards, because advertisers and survey partners fund the rewards. Scam apps also exist, so check the developer, the fees and what data the app asks for before using it.

What is the quickest way to spot a fake earning app?

Look for any payment you must make to join or withdraw, promises of fixed daily income, or requests for your OTP or UPI PIN. Any one of these is enough reason to uninstall.

Where does the money in a real reward app come from?

From advertisers and research companies that pay the app when users play a game, complete a survey or watch an ad. The app shares part of that with you as points, which you redeem for cash or vouchers.

How much should I expect from a genuine app?

Pocket money. Casual users typically see a few hundred to a few thousand rupees a month, depending on time spent and which tasks are available. It is not a replacement for a job.
