Gift Coupons in Reward Apps: Types and How to Use Them

Published 28 September 2026

By Vishal Kumar — Content & Growth at CashBoo — tests every earning method and payout flow first-hand

When people think of reward apps, they usually picture UPI cash. But a lot of the value sits in another corner of the redeem screen: gift coupons. A well-chosen voucher can cover your next Play Store purchase, shave money off a food order or pay for part of a phone recharge. The trick is knowing which kind of coupon you are looking at, because they do not all behave the same way.

Coupons, vouchers and gift cards: what the words mean

"Gift coupon" is a loose label for any code or voucher that gives you money off, money back or free credit with a particular brand. Inside a reward app you get them in one of two ways: some are handed out as rewards for completing a task, and others you buy with the points you have earned. On CashBoo, for example, you can exchange Coins for a Google Play or Amazon gift card at 125 Coins = ₹1, with redemptions starting at ₹10.

Five kinds you will come across

Here is a quick comparison, ordered roughly from most cash-like to most specific:

  • Gift cards (Google Play, Amazon, Flipkart and similar): stored value you spend directly in that store, closest to cash for online shopping
  • Recharge and bill coupons: money off a mobile recharge or a utility bill, handy because these are expenses everyone has each month
  • Cashback vouchers: part of your spend comes back after you shop or recharge, so you pay in full first and benefit later
  • Discount coupons: a flat amount or a percentage off one purchase, for example ₹100 off an order above a set value
  • Brand offer codes: free trials, food deals, travel offers or subscription discounts, useful mainly if you wanted that service anyway

Matching a coupon to how you spend

The best coupon is the one you would have used without it. A few everyday examples:

  • A college student who buys apps or game items on Google Play gets the most from a Play Store gift card
  • A homemaker who orders household supplies online may prefer an Amazon gift card, which works across a wide range of products
  • A daily commuter topping up a prepaid number benefits from recharge coupons
  • Someone who likes to try a streaming or food app before paying can use brand offer codes for a free trial

If you would rather have flexibility than a specific brand, UPI cash may suit you better. Our guide on how to get free gift cards walks through turning points into cards, and how to redeem UPI cash rewards covers the cash route.

Why the choice is so wide

Each brand is chasing a different kind of customer, so each designs a different offer. A food delivery app might offer money off the first order, a game might give in-app credit, and an OTT platform might open a free week. Reward apps collect these offers in one place, which is why the list keeps changing. If you want the business reasoning behind it, read why brands give free coupons to new apps.

What coupons do for your budget

  • They reduce what you actually pay for purchases already on your list
  • They let you test a paid app or service before committing money to it
  • They sit alongside your cash rewards, so the same effort stretches further
  • Gift cards in particular can be spent like cash within that store

Checks before you rely on a coupon

  • Expiry date: most coupons have one, and an expired code is worth nothing
  • Minimum order: a ₹100-off coupon may only apply above a certain cart value
  • Where it works: some codes are limited to the app, a category or new customers
  • Source: earn coupons through a genuine app; never buy "discounted" vouchers from random sellers

That last point matters. Resold voucher codes are a common fraud route, and complaints about them go to India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Before installing any coupon app, take a minute to check its Play Store data safety section so you know what data it collects.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of gift coupons can I get from reward apps?

The usual kinds are gift cards such as Google Play and Amazon, discount coupons, cashback vouchers, brand offer codes and recharge or bill coupons. On CashBoo you can redeem Coins for gift cards or UPI cash.

Is a gift card better than a discount coupon?

Usually yes, for flexibility. A gift card holds value you can spend on anything in that store, while a discount coupon only reduces the price of a specific purchase and often has conditions attached.

Do gift coupons have an expiry date?

Most of them do. Check the expiry date, any minimum-order rule and where the code can be used before you count on it.

Is it safe to buy cheap coupons from online sellers?

No. Resold voucher codes are a common fraud pattern. Earn coupons through a genuine reward app instead of buying them from unknown sellers.
